name that pest #57

Update: This problem has been identified as the fungas known as Juniper Pear Rust. Thanks everyone for your help.

I've noticed that several trees in the neighborhood have red spots on their leaves. These photos are from my pear tree.

Anyone know what pest/grossity causes this?

It looks like some sort of fungus, Melissa, but I'm no expert. It could be a rust gall, too -- also caused by spores. I'm sure someone better informed than myself may be able to help.

I think it is in the family of "rust" dormant spray .. garden sulphur .. are a couple of methods to keep it under control .. I have it on my serviceberry and hope to get it sprayed before it breaks bud next Spring .. it can stay in the neighborhood a long time .. spores flying around in the air .. nasty little so and so ! haha
